GMC produces two trucks with the 6500 rating; the C-Series TopKick 6500 and the T-Series 6500. Both are medium-duty commercial-use trucks. The C-Series places the engine in front of the cab, while the T-Series places the cab on top of the engine to provide more interior space.

Wheelbase

  • Each series of truck has a selection of wheelbase lengths. The C-Series 6500 is available with a wheelbase from 128 inches to 260 inches without frame reinforcement and up to 296 inches with frame reinforcement. The T-Series 6500 is available with a wheelbase from 140 inches to 260 inches.

Engine

  • Several engine options are available for the C- and T-Series 6500 trucks. The C-Series truck may have an 8.1-liter Vortec V8 gasoline powered engine or a 7.8-liter Isuzu 6H diesel powered engine. The Vortec engine is able to produce 295 horsepower and 440 ft-lbs. of torque. The Isuzu engine has three options; 215 horsepower and 560 ft-lbs. of torque, 230 horsepower and 660 ft-lbs. of torque or 260 horsepower and 660 ft-lbs. of torque. The T-Series 6500 is available with the Isuzu 6H diesel engine with the same horsepower and torque options as above.

Transmission

  • The C- and T-Series 6500 trucks are available with several transmission options, both automatic and manual. The C-Series has 15 automatic transmission options with five or six speeds and available overdrive. Five manual transmissions are available, also with five or six speeds. The T-Series has 13 automatic transmission options with five or six speeds and two manual transmission options, both with six speeds.

Brakes

  • The type of braking system is another option on the GMC 6500 models. The C-Series 6500 is available with either a hydraulic split-brake system or one of three different air compressor braking systems. The T-Series 6500 is available with either a hydraulic split-brake system or a water-cooled air compression system.
