If you have completed your career, but you're finding your retirement years a little too relaxing, you may enjoy a retirement job. Many older people take on post-career work out of financial necessity, while others do it for the social or intellectual stimulation. Finding the right job with the right people can help prevent the isolation that some retired people experience.
A docent is a guide at a gallery or art museum who provides tours and helps visitors understand the history and context of the art. Some docents are volunteers, while others are paid employees.
Retired people with an interest in the arts, particularly if they have a background as an artist, art historian or curator, are well qualified to work as docents. This job involves public speaking, doing research about art and interaction with many different people. It's a great job for sociable people with a lot of intellectual curiosity.
There is money to be made in the online world. This is an ideal pursuit for retirees with time on their hands, particularly if they are dealing with physical issues that may limit their mobility.
Ebay is a venue where used or new items can be sold in auction or sale formats. If you have amassed a large collection of anything, whether it be Hummel figurines or books, and have decided it's time to part with the collection, you may turn a tidy profit by auctioning it off online.
Other online money-making possibilities include writing articles, starting a blog and making money from ad clicks.
Many retirees enjoy their retirement because it gives them more time to pursue a craft hobby they may have been doing for years in their spare time. Woodworking, quilting or silk-screening could all be ramped up from a hobby to a small business with a bit of time and initiative.
Selling the products of your hobby through local craft sales, online or in local gift shops can lead to the satisfaction of making beautiful things and to a small income to augment your pension.
Writing is a difficult way to make a decent living, but if your main purpose is the satisfaction of self-expression, with a bit of income on the side, it could be for you in your retirement. Writing pursuits can range from short articles for blogs to feature length magazine pieces to novels and nonfiction books. Getting published is certainly no guarantee of fame and fortune, but it can be gratifying on a personal level to share your thoughts and knowledge.
