What Are the Responsibilities of a CNA Med Tech?

CNA med techs combine two entry-level nursing professions -- those of a certified nurse assistant and a medication technician. CNAs provide basic patient care, including measuring vital signs; medical technicians prepare, dispense and administer medication, as well as record and report the effects of the medicine. CNA med techs work under the supervision of a licensed nurse, often in a home care setting. They typically must have at least six months' experience as a CNA before being allowed to assume the responsibilities of both roles.

Patient Care

  • CNA med techs respond to patients' physical, emotional and environmental needs. They ensure patients are clean, well-groomed and fed timely and nutritious meals. CNA med techs also see to it that patients are housed in a tidy, comfortable environment. Their duties may include cooking, housekeeping, combing or brushing the patient's hair and helping patients to bathe, shave, dress and brush their teeth. They also help patients rise to a sitting or standing position, walk and sit down. CNA med techs turn bedridden patients so they do not develop bedsores. They measure and record patient weight, as well as blood pressure, urinary output, respiration and pulse.

Medicine Dispensing

  • CNA med techs prepare the proper dosage and dispense medication at time intervals set by the prescribing physician. They take the patient's vital signs and monitor patients for reactions to the medication. They must report any news regarding the administration of medicine. CNA med techs are responsible for reporting any changes in the patient's mental or physical condition and any deviations from the daily routine. Often they also order and restock medication.

Executing LPN/RN Instructions

  • CNA med techs work directly under registered nurses or licensed practical nurses. They execute any written or verbal instruction given to them by their supervisors, and refer to their supervisors with questions on how to deal with unforeseen situations.
