Personal leadership is having a passion or innate ability to develop your thinking, solidify your reasoning and appoint a focal center on your own life. It includes the patience, desire and engagement to take your life in that direction by carefully planning and then meticulously taking action to carry out and accomplish the vision you have for your future. Understanding the questions you should answer for yourself will help you understand theories for personal leadership.

What results do you want to achieve?

  • Think of the results you want to achieve by the end of the year, by the end of each quarter, by the end of every month, by the end of the week and by the end of each day. Setting time aside for time management is critical in discovering how to set goals and achieve success. Think about the best interest of your customers/clients, employees, investors/stockholders and the company as a whole.

What do you want to be recognized for?

  • Think of five to 10 top qualities you possess that are critical to you and your career. Match your qualities with descriptors that closely resemble your natural abilities and desires. Share them with your co-workers, friends and family to gain their feedback, and be open to all feedback and opinions. Some examples of qualities personal leaders possess are as follows:

    Independent

    Results-oriented

    Collaborative

    Creative

    Strategic

    Team Player

    Flexible

    Motivated

Define your personal leadership identifiers.

  • Mix your qualities up and combine them into phrases that reflect your passion. For example, using the qualities listed above, you could say that you are:

    Independently results-oriented

    Collaboratively creative

    A strategic team player

    Flexibly motivated

Create your personal leadership statement.

  • Now, you will put everything in the previous sections together to synchronize what you want to be recognized for with the results that you want to achieve. It will be defined such as: "I want to be recognized for my ability to be ____ so that I can achieve _____." For example, using the previous sections' examples, you could say: "I want to be recognized for my ability to be independently results-oriented, collaboratively creative and a strategic team player so that I can achieve a stronger bottom line for the company." This is a critical section because you are defining yourself here. Therefore, you want to ensure that it clearly defines who you are, that you are able to identify with it, and that it creates value with your company. Furthermore, that you understand the risks in defining how you plan to live each day.

Live your personal leadership theory.

  • Following up with your personal leadership definition is key to measure your personal leadership action plan. Therefore, you should communicate continuously and ask your peers for their feedback on how you are living up to your commitment. After all, it will be a part of your everyday work environment and asking those around you not only gives them the opportunity to voice their opinions but shows that you are striving to lead by efficiency. It will help keep you on your focal center, evolving into a successful theory over time and in the long run. You can then reap the benefit of enjoyment by being your own personal leader.
