In Charlotte, you're never far away from the water. Small lakes and ponds dot the landscape in and around the North Carolina city, and 32,500-acre Lake Norman is just a few miles away. Paddle boats -- sometimes called pedal boats -- are available for rent at a handful of parks in the region. These foot-propelled boats provide a good workout and a leisurely way to explore the water.
Places to Paddle
Lake Norman State Park, about 40 minutes north of Charlotte, overlooks the shore of its namesake lake and has both paddle boats and canoes for rental. You can rent the boats from the visitors center near the park entrance. Lake Norman is also one of the best fishing lakes in North Carolina, and the state park includes a swimming beach, hiking trails, picnic areas and campsites.
You can also rent paddle boats at Frank Liske Park in Concord, about 20 minutes east of Charlotte. The shady, quiet park includes a 10-acre lake for paddling and fishing, along with picnic shelters, horseshoe pits, ball fields and walking trails. Paddle boat rentals are also available in the city of Charlotte at Dave's Paddle Boats, which overlooks the pond at the center of University Place, just west of the University of North Carolina.
