Philippine fast-food restaurants offer more than just burgers and fries.

While American brands of fast food have taken a small foothold in the Philippine marketplace, many Filipinos have not gotten on board with the likes of KFC, McDonald's, Burger King or Wendy's. Home-grown fast-food franchises have seen tremendous success and economic growth by feeding hungry Filipinos and their families with economically priced meals. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Jollibee

    • Opened in 1978, Jollibee has become the epitome of fast food in the Philippine islands. With more than 500 stores, compared to 235 McDonald's, Jollibee serves American-style fast food with a Philippine twist that has captured the heart and taste buds of hungry families. The menu serves up more than just burgers and fries, though. There is also spaghetti, hotdogs, fried and barbecued chicken, and meals served with rice.

    Chowking

    • Bought by the Jollibee Company, Chowking is a fast-food establishment that serves Chinese food. Main dishes can be purchased as individual plates with a variety of sides, such as rice and noodles, or purchased as a large family-style dish. Fried chicken is another main menu item. They also serve fried rice, dim sum, and noodle dishes.

    Greenwich Pizza

    • Another company that was bought by Jollibee is Greenwich Pizza. Offering both sit-down dining and delivery, Greenwich Pizza includes special pizzas that would appeal to both Filipino and American palates. Aside from their overloaded pizza combinations, this franchise serves pasta dishes, fried chicken, and a variety of side dishes.

    Mang Inasal

    • A fast-food franchise that offers more Philippine-style foods is Mang Inasal. Founded in 2003, they have grown rapidly to over 225 stores. Though they do have a few burgers on the menu, the bulk of their menu consists of barbecued chicken and grilled pork kabobs served with rice. Other traditional Philippine dishes offered are beef and bangus sinagangs. Sinagangs are soups characterized by a sour taste, usually from tamarind, while bangus is a type of fish.

    Max's Restaurant

    • A fast food chain that has its origins in post-World War II Philippines, Max's offers a wide array of dishes. The chain serves breakfast all day but also serves up fried chicken, lumpia and sandwiches. This chain offers individual plates or set menus for families of up to 10 people.

    Pancake House

    • Another of the Philippines' home-grown fast-food dining options is the Pancake House. Originally opened in 1970, they expanded quickly following a company buyout in 2000. Breakfast dishes run the gamut from American favorites to pancakes and waffles, as you may have guessed.
