Although 79 percent of electricians work in the construction industry, there will be opportunities for electricians in other industries, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2010 to 2011 Edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook. For instance, some electricians upgrade, repair or install wiring systems for businesses or private residential areas. The various occupations include electrical drafters, electrical engineering technicians and electrical installers.

Electrical drafters

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that "electrical drafters prepare wiring and layout diagrams used by workers who erect, install, and repair electrical equipment and wiring in communication centers, power plants, electrical distribution systems and buildings." The diagrams illustrate technical details, such as sketches, calculations and specifications of the construction or maintenance teams to follow. In addition, the schematics show how to wire a particular project.

Electrical engineering technicians

  • Electrical engineering technicians assist in the design, development and assessment processes, and manufacture electronic and electrical equipment, including communication apparatus, computers, navigational units and medical monitoring devices, according to the bureau.

Electrical installer

  • An electrical installer connects and repairs wiring systems of construction sites, security systems, vehicles and communication devices. An electrical installer must prepare building cost regulations and safety guidelines. In addition, an electrical installer uses ladders and performs jobs in tight areas.
