The BMW 3 Series accounts for 40 percent of the automaker's sales worldwide. The 328i combines features common to sports cars and touring autos, resulting in a hybrid of luxury and performance. Since its inception in 1975, the 3 Series has been powered by 12 different engines, hosted five different body styles and experienced myriad modifications in its design elements.
The 328i features a three liter, water-cooled six cylinder dual overhead cam -- DOHC -- engine that generates 215 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, 199 foot-pounds of torque at 2,750 rpm and has a 12:1 compression ratio. It has a displacement of 2,996 cc, a 3.35 inch bore, a 3.46 inch stroke and an aluminum and magnesium composite engine block that allows for a lighter overall engine weight. A Valvetronic variable valve timing system -- VVTS -- provides continuous and precise variable intake valve lift, and its Double VANOS technology improves valve timing by positioning the camshaft in relation to the drive gear. The 328i has a top speed of 155 mph, reaches 62 mph in 6.7 seconds and features electronic throttle control.
The 328i features a rack and pinion power assisted steering, PAS, system with a 16:1 steering ratio, a rear-wheel drive transmission, a 12.3 inch diameter ventilated disc front braking system and an 11.8 inch diameter ventilated disc servo-assisted rear braking system. It has a double-pivot front sports suspension with dual-forged aluminum lower arms, a five-link rear sport suspension with cast-aluminum upper transverse arms and front and rear anti-roll bars. It also features an all-wheel anti-lock braking system.
The interior features leather upholstery, a vehicle monitoring system with pictographic display and coded driveway protection. It has front and side impact airbags, crash sensors and dark burl walnut comprises the console and door trim. Performance amenities include Dynamic Stability Control --DSC -- Dynamic Braking Control -- DBC -- twin-tube gas pressure shock absorbers and extensive use of aluminum components throughout the assembly.
The 328i has an overall vehicle length of 178.2 inches, a width of 71.5 inches and a height of 55.9 inches. It has a wheelbase of 108.7 inches, a front track width of 59.1 inches and a rear track width of 60.2 inches. The interior seats five passengers, has a front headroom of 38.5 inches, a front legroom of 41.4 inches and front shoulder room of 55.4 inches. The rear has a headroom of 37.5 inches, legroom of 34.6 inches and shoulder room of 55.1 inches.
