The Chevy 305 engine refers to the 305 cubic inch V-8 displacement engine, which was developed for use in autos produced between 1976 and 1992. Overall, the engine was not very powerful, reaching only 220 to 230 horsepower at its most powerful. Nonetheless, the engine was used in the early 1990 Camaro models, which proved popular with car buyers.
History of 305 Chevy Engines
The Chevrolet 305 engines were produced from 1976 until 1992. The 305 Chevy is a small block engine with a small bore of 3.736 inches and a stroke of 3.48 inches. In the early 1980s the 305 engines' fuel delivery was a cross-fire FI. The engine had 165 hp at 4,200 rpm. The mid-80s saw a change in the fuel delivery method to Tuned Port FI, which was employed until the extinction of the engine. The engine achieved its highest hp of 220 to 230 hp at 4,400 rpm in the mid to late 1980s.
1986 Chevy 305 Engine
The 1986 Chevy 305 was one of the most powerful of the modifications to this engine. The engine boasted 190 hp at 4,000 rpm. The torque was 285 at 2,800 rpm. The bore measured 3.736 inches and the stroke 3.48 inches. Some enthusiasts consider the bore/stroke ratio to be slightly better than that of the more powerful 454 Chevy engine as well as other 4,030 x 4,000 stroke engines.
The performance of the Chevy 305 engine has been described by as disappointing, especially in the GM F- and G- bodies. One reason for the disappointment is the low hp (averaging 140-150). However, the Camaro models of the 1990s carried the 305 engine. Enthusiasts note that the Camaro LB9 defied the poor reception by becoming one of the most popular models in 1990.
