Homemade Christmas Gift Ideas for Grandparents

Grandparents may not be very helpful when it comes to telling you what they would like for Christmas. Ask them why and many will say that they have everything they need. Regardless, grandparents are important so it's natural to want to give them something meaningful and completely unique. Homemade Christmas gifts are a great way to show grandparents how special they are to you and how much you appreciate their love.

Customized Clothing

  • Grandparents love to show the world how beautiful their grandchildren are. Customizable tee shirts and mugs with photos of the grandkids' smiling faces are a fun bragging tool for grandparents, even if they only wear them in the comfort of their own home.

For a creative spin or if they already have their grandkids' faces on the majority of their possessions, you can make a hand print sweatshirt. Cover the grandchild's hand in fabric paint and have them leave a single hand print on a t-shirt or sweatshirt. Use different colors for each child and write the date on the shirt tag.

Family Tree

  • Grandparents are treasure troves of memories and family history, but often what they know is stored in their head. Combine their knowledge with that of other relatives and resources like online genealogy websites to sketch out a family tree beginning with their grandchildren. You can have the family tree printed on thick archival paper and framed. If you enjoy needlework, cross stitch or embroider the family tree on linen and create a wall hanging with a wooden rod and ribbon. Sometimes exact names and dates of ancestors can be confused in records or people's memories so it's a good idea to cross-reference information before creating a formal copy of your family tree.

Homemade Treats

  • Christmas is the time of year to enjoy favorite homemade sweets. Make small batches of several of their favorite sweets including cookies, brownies and fudge. The small batches will allow them a taste of their favorites without the temptation to over-indulge. Package the sweets in fun holiday tins of different sizes and glue a family photo to the lid of the largest tin.

If the grandparents enjoy cooking, you may also want to include a small, handwritten recipe book of healthy meals they can cook together. Make sure to take diet restrictions into consideration; there are plenty of sugar-free treats you can make instead.
