2006 GMC Envoy Oil Specifications

by John Walker

The 2006 GMC Envoy has two engine options -- a 4.2-liter six-cylinder engine code S and a 5.3-liter eight-cylinder engine code M. Locate the VIN to identify the engine code. The VIN is located on the bottom, driver-side corner of the front windshield. The eighth digit tells you the engine code.

4.2L Engine Code S

Factory recommendations for the 4.2-liter engine include using seven quarts of SAE 5w30 oil and a WIX 51522 Oil Filter or other manufacturer's equivalent. The recommendations for the oil drain plug are 19 foot-pounds of torque. If a torque wrench is unavailable, 19 foot-pounds of torque is equivalent to getting the drain plug snug by hand and then turning the socket wrench approximately three-quarters to one full turn past snug.

5.3L Engine Code M

The 5.3-liter Envoy uses 6.1 quarts of SAE 5w30 with a WIX 51042 Oil Filter or other manufacturer's equivalent. Tighten the oil drain plug to 18 foot-pounds of torque. Always inspect the drain plug and gasket when replacing. A damaged drain plug will not torque properly and a damaged gasket will leak oil.

Options

For extended use or distance driving, use extended-mileage filters and synthetic oils. The factory recommendations call for synthetic oils to be used with both engine types. However, the type of oil used in a vehicle depends upon the mileage and needs of the vehicle. High-mileage oils use additives to help condition the seals. Engine oil additives may also be used to help condition the seals at each oil change.
