How to Sew a Fleece Blanket With Fleece Binding

Goodshoot/Goodshoot/Getty Images

Fleece is one of the easiest materials to work with if you want to make a blanket. Besides being soft and comfortable, fleece does not ravel, eliminating the need to finish raw edges. Because fleece has a certain amount of stretch, you don't have to cut fleece strips on the bias if you want to bind your blanket with fleece edging.

Cut one 54-by-72-inch rectangle of fleece.

From the remaining yard of fabric, cut eight 36-by-4-inch strips of fleece. With right sides of fleece together, sew short ends of fleece strips together to form one long strip.

Fold the strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together to form a 2-inch-wide doubled strip. Keeping the iron off the surface of the fleece, steam lightly to form soft crease.

Place the binding on the blanket. Beginning at one corner of the large rectangle, slip the doubled fleece strip over the edges of the blanket. Pin in place. When pinning around the corners, fold the fleece strip to create neat, mitered corners. (See Resources.) Trim off excess strip length.

Stitch the binding to the blanket, sewing with a long, straight stitch through all thicknesses 1/4 inch away from the cut edge of the binding.
