If you want to listen to the audio from your computer over headphones instead of a speaker system, you can connect the headphones to your computer. When headphones are connected to a computer, the speakers become quiet and all of the audio plays only through the headphones. Even if you don't have a headphone port on the computer, you can plug the headphones into the speaker port.

Step 1

Look at the front of your computer. Most computers have a headphone port positioned on the front of the computer display (this holds true for laptop computers). However, if you don't have a headphone port, remove the speaker cable running into the speaker port on the back of the computer.

Step 2

Plug the headphone jack into the headphone port (or the speaker port). Push the jack completely in to ensure a secure cable connection.

Step 3

Double-click the speaker icon in the lower-right corner of the desktop. This launches the volume control window.

Step 5
