2006 Ford 4.6 Liter V-8 Detailed Specs

by Christian Petersen

Ford's 4.6-liter V-8 engine for the model year 2006 was used in several applications, including the Mustang and Crown Victoria cars, the F-150 pickup truck and the Explorer SUV. While all of these motors were based on the same modular design, they varied from model to model. For instance, the Mustang version produced 300 horsepower while the Crown Victoria produced 224 horsepower. These motors all shared certain basic characteristics, but certain specifications varied from model to model.

Displacement

Several different displacements were produced in these motors during the 2006 model year. These differences were generally small and resulted from different piston stroke configurations. The Mustang and F-150 motors had a displacement of 4,606 cc, the Crown Victoria had a displacement of 4,601 cc and the Explorer had a displacement of 4,605 cc.

Torque and Horsepower

The different versions of this motor produced varying amounts of peak horsepower and torque. The F-150 had 231 horsepower at 4,750 rpm and 293 feet-pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm while the Crown Victoria produced 224 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and 275 feet-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. The Explorer had 292 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and 300 feet-pounds of torque at 3,950 rpm. The Mustang had the highest ratings, producing 300 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and 320 feet-pounds of torque at 4,500 rpm.

Cylinder and Piston Specifications

The pistons used in all 2006 4.6-liter V-8 engines share the same bore: 90.2 mm. The differences between the various iterations of this motor are in the specifications for stroke, number of valves, and compression ratios. The Mustang, Explorer and Crown Victoria had a stroke figure of 90 mm while the F-150 had a stroke set at 89.9 mm. The F-150 had two valves per cylinder and a 9.3-to-1 compression ratio. The Crown Victoria had a 9.4-to-1 compression ratio with two valves per cylinder. The Explorer and Mustang had compression ratios of 9.8-to-1 and three valves per cylinder. All versions operated with the same firing order--1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.
