The City University of New York, or CUNY, is one of the most respected public universities in the country. According to the New York Daily News, it's the nation's largest with a student population of more than 480,000. Under this one university are 23 colleges and institutions spread throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The levels of education available are broad--from an associate's degree to a doctorate and more.

CUNY Graduate School of Journalism

The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism is located in mid-Manhattan. According the school's website, the campus is a block away from Times Square and next door to The New York Times. Students earn their master's degrees through a three-semester program. Alumni have gone on to work in major newsrooms such as The New York Times, People magazine, CBS News and The Wall Street Journal.

LaGuardia Community College

Head over to the Queens borough where LaGuardia Community College is located. More than 16,000 students attend the institution that calls itself "The World's Community College." Students from more than 160 countries and counting have attended the school.

Brooklyn College

Brooklyn College has educated students since 1930. According to its site, many of its students are immigrants or children of immigrants. Students have the choice of 120 undergraduate and graduate degrees to pursue. Roughly 17,000 students attend Brooklyn College. Notable alumni include U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, actor Jimmy Smits and writer Gloria Naylor.

Lehman College

The Bronx is home to the Lehman College campus. The liberal arts college is named after the late New York Gov. Herbert H. Lehman, who served the state during the Great Depression. More than 12,000 students attend the 37-acre campus. The school's website reports having more than 60,000 alumni. Approximately half of them live in the Bronx or the New York City area.

CUNY Staten Island

CUNY Staten Island, or CSI, is the sole CUNY campus in this borough. CSI offers associate's, undergraduate and graduate degrees. The 204-acre campus, surrounded with greenery, is the largest in New York City.
