More than 13 million people have a thyroid disorder, although many people aren't aware of it. Two of the most common thyroid conditions, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, are caused when the thyroid gland is under-active or over-active, respectively. Along with conventional medical treatment, avoiding foods that trigger or exacerbate your condition can help to alleviate any problems.

Aspartame/Diet Products

Aspartame is suggested to be avoided for people with hyperthyroidism. Aspartame is also packaged under the labels of NutraSweet and Equal. Many people have adverse reactions to aspartame and this may make symptoms worse or create new symptoms.

High-Iodine Foods

If you suffer from hyperthyroidism, you should avoid foods that are high in iodine. This includes seafood and cheeses. Too much iodine can interfere with thyroid function, and actually cause hypothyroidism.

Other Foods

Anyone with a thyroid problem should avoid foods that are known to interfere with how the thyroid works. These foods include broccoli, cauliflower, mustard greens, turnips, peanuts and soy products.

Alcohol, Tobacco and Caffeine

These unnecessary drugs cause problems with many conditions, and can interfere with the way thyroid medications work.
