Pergola Styles

Save

Pergolas are a type of landscaping structure designed to provide shade in sunny areas and minimal covering that still allows guests and homeowners to enjoy the sky and light. Most pergolas are made from wood, and they use simple beams or latticework for coverings. This latticework can also be used to grow vines or other plants for a leafy addition. There are several pergola styles to choose from, and many different variations on these styles.

Column

  • Columned pergolas tend to have strong, large columns instead of the simple posts that most pergolas use. Often, these columns are made of a separate material, like stone or concrete. Some elaborate pergolas have two columns at each corner for an added effect. These pergolas are useful for those who want pergolas that match stonework that they already have in their landscaping.

Path Style

  • Path style pergolas are open wide at both ends and are designed to be walked through, as if they were covering a path. They do not need to cover a path, but many homeowners choose to place them over stone walkways or long patios. These pergolas are more rectangle-shaped than others, which tend to stick closer to square shapes.

Adjacent

  • Adjacent pergolas only have two posts, and the roofing beams run across to a side of the house. This type of pergola is useful for patios and decks where only two posts are needed, and the deck and pergola can be combined into one unit. The problem is usually in construction. The pergola beams typically need to be installed into the house siding, which requires some extra work.

Garden Room

  • A garden room pergola is designed separate from the house, and is typically detached from patios and decks entirely. These are often located in the middle of lawns and gardens, and are the most likely to be shaped like a square. It is called a garden room because the pergola sets aside a space separate from the house, but since pergolas have no walls and barely a roof, they cannot offer much protection against the weather.
