Boat Cabin Storage Ideas

Save

Living or traveling on a boat gives you the opportunity to have a home while you see new things and places. The trade-off is that your home is very small. Storage space is at a premium on boats, which is why every little nook and cranny must be used.

Below the Floor

  • Most boat cabin floors have removable planks that allow you to access the bilge pump and the ballast. There isn't much room down there, and what room there is isn't appropriate for fragile or sensitive things. However, it is a place to store a few small and hardy objects that might be in the way elsewhere in the boat. Anything that's made of plastic and is waterproof and non-breakable, for example, can be stored there.

Behind the Benches

  • Boat cabins can have many different layouts. Some have recessed bunks behind the bench seats that are typically around a central table, while others have benches with backs that fold up or down to create bunks. If your boat cabin has bench backs that are movable, you may be able to store small items behind them. The best thing to store in this location is bedding, since you will probably be moving the bench backs anyway and will have easy access to items such as sleeping pads or blankets. Pillows, though, will probably not fit in this space without making the bench uncomfortable by pushing the back too far out.

Hanging from the Ceiling

  • The ceilings of boat cabins are low, but small items can be hung from the ceiling in locations that are out of the path of traffic. The advantage of hanging something from the ceiling is that when the boat heels or encounters swells while sailing, the item will simply continue hanging there rather than crashing to the floor if it were sitting on a counter. Possible items that can be usefully hung from the ceiling include foodstuffs such as garlic or onions, candles in hanging holders, and web bags for holding personal items.
