3G is an acronym for third-generation wireless. The term refers to the initiative of the International Telecommunication Union that created a global wireless standard for mobile Internet access. The 3G standard requires a minimum mobile Internet access speed that is comparable to digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet speeds. There must also be high-volume voice services to meet the standard of 3G.
Increased Mobile Internet Speeds
The most apparent benefit is the boost in speeds afforded to mobile Internet consumers. Mobile phones, wireless modems and data cards can provide speeds comparable to digital subscriber line speeds. This bridges a gap in Internet access in rural areas and areas with limited connectivity, and allows connection speeds that greatly exceed the speeds of dial-up Internet access. Setting a global standard increases the availability of Internet and wireless voice services in remote areas throughout the world.
Rural and remote areas stand to benefit most from the 3G standard. 3G provides affordable voice and data access in more areas by encouraging telecommunication providers to expand into regions that were previously uncovered by communication networks. Mobile phone reception will extend beyond the typical areas to serve a broader range of customers and provide more coverage for existing customers. Mobile phone users will experience fewer dropped calls and better reception in areas with 3G coverage.
Corporate and personal consumers will benefit from the increased speed and coverage. Consumers will enjoy more multimedia applications and experience enhanced operation of existing applications. Real-time video conferencing is possible with 3G connectivity. Users can download videos, images and music faster. Accessing email, playing network games and performing financial transactions are all tasks that can be completed quickly with 3G technology.
3G is being used to provide valuable services that will improve health care, education and more for people in various global locations. 3G Internet access can provide learning opportunities in classrooms around the globe. China, Indonesia, Guatemala, Vietnam and the United States currently use 3G to enhance the educational experience of students. Peru and Thailand are using 3G technology to provide better access to health care through increased patient-physician communication. India uses 3G technology to allow fishermen to access real-time weather information that can save lives.
