Removal of Kenmore Elite Fridge Door Water Line

Nathan McGinty

Many Kenmore Elite models have a water dispenser that provides cold water at the touch of a button. Occasionally, you may need to remove the Kenmore Elite door water line. This might happen, for example, when you are replacing a refrigerator door or switching out the handles to change them from right to left.

Kenmore Refrigerators

All Kenmore Elite refrigerators consist of a freezer compartment and a refrigerator compartment. The freezer compartment can be underneath, on top or to the side of the refrigeration compartment, depending on the model.

Water Dispeners

Some models of Kenmore Elite refrigerators come with a water and/or ice dispenser mounted in the refrigerator door so you can get cold water and ice without opening the refrigerator or freezer compartments. Although this is convenient, it can make the refrigerator work harder and therefore increase your utility bills. The water to the refrigerator comes from your home water supply, usually through a water supply hose connected to the rear of the refrigerator.

Before Starting Work

Before you remove the water line from the Kenmore Elite, turn off the electricity to the appliance to prevent accidental shocks. You can either unplug the refrigerator or turn off the electricity for the Kenmore Elite at the main circuit breaker. You also should turn off the water supply valve where the water line is connected; this is typically underneath the nearest sink.

Removing the Water Line

The water line is mounted in the refrigerator cabinet and refrigerator door in Kenmore Elites. Open the refrigerator door, and look in the bottom corner of the refrigerator. You should see both the wiring harness and the water line. Disconnect the wiring harness by pulling the sockets apart. Disconnect the water line by gently pulling on the two sides of the water supply hose coupling. Keep a towel handy in case water drips out. Once the line is disconnected, you can remove the water line and door from the refrigerator.
