You can effectively market your offerings via newsletters and mailers. which can be mailed without the use of envelopes and for a reduced postage rate -- at least $0.13 less for each item that qualifies as a postcard -- compared to traditional letter rates. The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has special mailing rates for businesses and individuals who mail these types of items, but you must take special care to ensure the mailer meets USPS requirements.

Size Requirements

Mailers should be between 3 1/2 and 6 1/8 inches in height, between 5 and 11 1/2 inches in length, and between 0.007 and 1/4 inch in thickness, about the thickness of an index card.

Folding Techniques

Mailers should be folded with the fold at the bottom of the printed page. This will enable the mailer to go through the machine processor without jamming the machine. If the machine becomes jammed or the mailers must be metered by hand, a mailer surcharge will be assessed for the mailing. This could be costly for the business sending out the mailers.

Proper Closing of the Mailer

Newsletters and mailers should be closed using one of two methods: If the newsletter is a single page, then one wafer seal or mailing tab should be placed in the middle of the open end of the mailer. If the newsletter is two or more pages, then two wafers or tabs should be used, each being one inch from the left and right corners of the open end.

Paper Size and Weight

Depending on the mailer, the paper used should have a bond weight between 20 and 28 lbs. These are common paper bond weights and can be found on the front of the packaging of a ream of paper.
