Foods to Prevent Water Retention

If you find that you're feeling bloated or a little heavier than usual, it may not be because you have gained weight. It's possible that you could just be retaining water. This is even more likely if you've been eating a lot of salty foods or taking certain medications. However, there are some simple changes you can make in your diet to prevent water retention.

  • Fruits that have a high water content, such as watermelon, will help reduce the amount of fluid being stored in your body. Other fruits that can help you shed water weight include citrus fruits such as grapefruits and oranges.

It is also important to make sure that the fruits you eat are high in potassium and fiber. Both of these nutrients are important to stop the retention of excess fluids. Fruits high in potassium and fiber include melons and apples.

  • The best vegetables for people trying to avoid bloating are leafy greens, such as cabbage, spinach and kale. These foods are also high in potassium, which helps balance out fluid levels. Other vegetables include those that are high in water, such as cucumber and celery. While it's always a good idea to add more vegetables into your diet, it's even more important if you are prone to retaining water. However, you want to be sure that you are eating foods raw when possible and definitely not adding salt if you decide to cook the vegetables. Any excess sodium will only lead to additional water retention.

  • It may seem counter-intuitive, but one of the best ways to avoid bloating and water retention is by drinking more liquids. Most importantly, try drinking more water than you usually do. If you don't like plain water, try squeezing lemon juice into your glass. It will give the water a little bit of flavor and will actually assist in reducing water retention.

In addition to drinking more water, there are liquids such as unsweetened cranberry juice and dandelion tea that are natural diuretics and will help you shed water weight.Try one to two cups of each a day, which may help alleviate your symptoms.
