Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is the term used for the symptoms that many young girls and women experience about one or two weeks before their period starts each month. The symptoms can be useful in determining when a period is coming. For girls that have not yet had their period, puberty symptoms are a major sign that one may be coming soon.

Signs Your First Period is Coming

There are many different changes that occur before you start your first period. For instance, you may start to notice vaginal discharge along with the growth of hair under your arms and in your pubic area. You may also notice that you have had a growth spurt and that your breasts are growing larger.

Indicators

If you are regular in your period every month it may be easy to know when you period is coming, as you count 28 days from the start of your previous period. For some women periods can be irregular and it is hard to know or be prepared for your period. There are many indicators, however, that can help in this matter. You may notice about a one week or two weeks before your period starts a breakout of acne, stomach bloating, breast and backaches, tiredness, constipation, diarrhea, or headaches. One of the major signs is depression and feelings of being stressed. Taking note of these symptoms can help determine when your period is about to start.

Premenstrual Syndrome and Women

The exact cause of PMS has not yet been determined; however, it is suggested that the fluctuation in hormone levels throughout a woman's menstrual cycle is the cause. If you do experience PMS symptoms there are many ways to help reduce the aches and pains. For instance, eating a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, reducing your salt intake and drinking a lot of water can minimize the symptoms. In addition, exercising can help reduce stress. If you have severe symptoms, there are over the counter and prescription medications.
