Tropical Decorating Ideas for the Bathroom

Save

The bathroom is likely one of the only spaces in your home where you can achieve complete privacy. Additionally, your bathroom is not only a place where you go to start and end your day, but a place where you can find quiet within a hectic day. If you are looking to re-model your bathroom, turn it into a relaxing retreat by decorating it in a tropical style.

Color Palette

  • Set the stage for your tropical bathroom by selecting a color palette. Tropical designs use either bright colors or earthy, muted colors. If you'd like to have an invigorating experience each time you escape to your bathroom, go with bright colors, such as salmon, teal, and vibrant orange. For a more subdued look, use a color scheme that reflects pale tones, such as sky blue, sage green and sand. Whichever palette you choose, you can incorporate the colors into the bathroom's paint, tiles and accessories.

Natural Elements

  • Natural elements are an important part of tropical design. Set a glass vessel sink on top of a cherry wood vanity. Use travertine or glass mosaic tiles in the shower, on the walls or on the countertop. River rock is an ideal substitute for tile that fits in well with the natural vibe of tropical design. Use wrought iron or brass faucets and knobs in your shower and on your sink.

Lighting

  • Sunlight abounds in the tropics, and it should as well in your tropical-style bathroom. If you have windows in the space, you are a step ahead of the game. Cover them with bamboo blinds or plantation shutters, which provide privacy while still allowing the sunlight to come in. If the space doesn't have windows and it's possible to add one or even a skylight, do so. In the event that adding windows is not a possibility, you can illuminate your bathroom with artificial light. Recessed lighting installed above key areas, such as the shower and sink, will give the space a warm glow. Hang wall sconces with bamboo shades on the walls.

Tropical Accessories

  • Complete the look of your tropical bathroom with accessories. A woven fabric shower curtain lends itself well to the design. On the floor, place a jute or seagrass rug. Bamboo is a material that is often found in the tropics. You can incorporate the material in toothbrush and soap holders, or place a live bamboo plant in a large urn and position it on the floor. Fill glass vases or bowls with seashells and seaglass. Pictures of tropical landscapes hung on the walls will help you to escape.
