Volunteer opportunities bring church congregants together for a common purpose.

Congregations can put their faith into actions of good works to help their community or others in need by volunteering. Many volunteer opportunities exist for those within the church who wish to apply their different levels of skill and talent. Projects need not be complicated or time consuming when many hands working together to affect positive change.

  1. NAMI Walk for America

    • Church members can pool their efforts for "The National Alliance for Mental Illness Walk" that raises funds and awareness for those living with mental illness. NAMI is dedicated to improving individuals and families through education and support activities. Congregants can participate in a 5 kilometer walk with sponsorships that pledge dollars for each distance walked.

    Simple Sewing and Knitting

    • Sewing or stitching simple projects can benefit soldiers abroad, young patients in childrens' hospitals or low-income individuals who rely on food kitchens for their meals. Church members can stitch Christmas stockings and then filled them with personal hygiene products or goodies for soldiers who are sure to appreciate a thought from home.

      Puppets sewn from simple canvas or burlap, adorned with googly eyes and lips and then personalized can brighten the day of a sick child in the hospital. Volunteers can stitch place mats together and then decorate them with felt accessories or special messages of love to be used by Meals on Wheels or Loaves and Fishes clients during their meals.

      Crafty knitters can whip up caps for patients who have lost their hair during chemotherapy or other illnesses, while crocheters can create hand or toe cozies for patients in casts.

    Letter Writing For Hunger

    • Global hunger issues are a cause that many churches become involved in. "Bread for the World" is a collective Christian organization that urges decision makers to work together to eradicate hunger throughout the world. Each year "Bread for the World" asks congregations nationwide to write letters to Congress regarding hunger-related issues. Members of the church can get together on a special Sunday after church and volunteer to write a particular volume of letters for impact.
