The Requirements for a COD4 Dedicated Server

Much debate exists over the ideal configuration of a "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" server. Neither Activision nor Infinity Ward have stated requirements for running a COD4 server. Unlike the client version of "Call of Duty 4," the server environment can run on a variety of operating systems under a myriad of system configurations. Generally, the requirements fluctuate depending on the number of users to be connected simultaneously, with fewer users being less taxing on the server (requiring far less hardware).

  1. Hardware Requirements

    • The hardware demands of a 'Call of Duty 4' server are drastically different than that of the actual game.

The minimum hardware required to run a "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" server is simple. However, stronger hardware will only increase the user/client experience. Utilizing the minimum hardware could cause frustrating "lag" for your users. Unlike the "Call of Duty" client version, a strong video card will not enhance the server hosting experience. The key hardware element when hosting a "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" server is RAM. The following should be considered as the minimum hardware for a COD4 server (hosting a maximum of eight players):

      1GB RAM

      Network card (LAN preferred)

      1.4+ GHz processor

      40GB hard drive

The following server configuration would create a better hosting experience:

      3.2GHz processor

      LAN card

      8GB+ RAM

      120GB hard drive

    Software Requirements

    • When hosting a "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" server, the software requirements are easy to meet, as the server software is so flexible. Linux (any port), OS X+, and Windows 2000 (and later) can be used in conjunction with the "Call of Duty 4" software. The only software requirements on the server are "Call of Duty 4" server files (available on the "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" DVD) and server patches (available from

    Network Requirements

    • "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" requires that the UDP 20800, UDP 20810 and UDP 28960 network ports be open. Additionally, the network connection should be heavily evaluated before beginning to host the "Call of Duty" server as bandwidth will be a major factor in the user experience (a lack of bandwidth can cause lag). In this instance, you also should consider the number of users who will be connecting. More users will require more bandwidth. Minimally (eight users max), you should have a high-speed DSL, cable or other connection type achieving 1.5MBps down/256KBps up. Ideally, a "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" server should have 20MBps+ down/1.5MBps+ up. This connection would suffice for a 32-slot server. However, for a 64-slot server, a T1 or T3 Internet connection would be necessary. This type of connection is typically only available in businesses (due to its high cost) or at data centers.
