Basketball is a common sport among adolescent boys and girls, helping them develop teamwork skills and hand-eye coordination. Incorporating basketball into a party is a convenient way for children and teenagers to enjoy the sport and burn off excess energy. Basketball-themed parties may have basketball invitations, cakes and favors, and you can organize real basketball games during the party to enhance the theme. You can play these games on a basketball court or in a driveway. If you are throwing a party for small children, make sure to rope off the driveway and watch the children to prevent them from wandering into the street.
Randomly determine a playing order with the participants. Direct the first player to shoot the basketball from anywhere on the court. If the ball goes in, all of the other players need to make a basket from that same point. If a player misses a shot, she gets an "O." The second time she misses a shot, she gets a "U" and the third time she misses a shot, she gets a "T." At this point, the player is out of the game. If the original player misses a shot, the next player takes the lead position and tries to make a shot from anywhere he chooses. The last player in the game wins.
Chase the Dog
Give a bandanna to each person and instruct them to tuck the bandannas in their back pockets to resemble a dog's tail. Shout "Go!" and have the kids dribble the ball around the court. While they are dribbling they try to grab the bandanna out of others' back pockets to get them out of the game. The last person on the court wins. This game is not suitable for young children who may not be able to dribble well enough.
Instruct each person to stand at a pre-marked free throw line. Make the line closer if the children are younger. If they are very young, use a small basketball and a bucket instead of a hoop. Time each person to see how many free throws they can do in 30 seconds. Have several basketballs near the free throw line so they can continue shooting rapidly.
