When you decide that you are going to decorate your yard for Christmas, you may find yourself at a loss for creative ideas. Outdoor Christmas lights can be used to emphasize other outdoor decorations, or they can be used to augment areas of your yard. Use outdoor Christmas lights to help your house to stand out from the other decorated homes on your block.
When many people start putting together their outside Christmas lighting plans, they look at the trim of their home and the largest tree in the front yard as the obvious items to decorate. Use all of your landscaping options when decorating your front yard. If you have a two-tiered lawn, for example, maximize it. Place light-up outdoor Christmas buildings on the bottom tier and Santa Claus with his sleigh and reindeer on the upper tier to make it look like Santa is flying over the village. Decorate the shrubs that line your driveway or sidewalk with programmable LED lights and have them change color and patterns to give a unique look to your front walk.
Turn on flood lights to spotlight and add color to your outdoor Christmas light display. Use energy-efficient bulbs to keep your electricity bill down. Point green or red flood lights at your home, or highlight yard decorations that do not have lighting built into them with a soft white flood light. You can also purchase an exterior projector to project holiday images on your home or in the snow on your front yard.
Hanging Christmas lights on the outside of your windows will show off whatever is in, and on, your windows. Clean your windows before you put your Christmas lights up, and wash the shutters on either side of your windows if you have them. If you do not want people to be able to see into your home, close your curtains.
Sometimes the simplest of outdoor Christmas light decorating ideas can be the most effective. If you have white columns on your front porch, clean them and wrap them in red lights to create candy canes. If your porch columns are not white, then you can either alternate white and red lights, or you can wrap the column in bright white vinyl before putting on the red lights.
