Ideas for a Master Bedroom Doorway

Distinguish the master bedroom from other rooms with a distinct doorway.

The doorway to a master bedroom should be one of the first considerations of bedroom design. Though many homeowners opt to select a doorway design that matches other interior doors throughout the home, other options offer designs that distinguish the master bedroom from other interior spaces. Select a doorway that offers both privacy and style in order to meet all of your master bedroom design needs.

Glass Doors

Glass doors need not be relegated to the realm of exterior sliders or family room doors. A single door with a center pane of frosted glass adds elegance to a master bedroom doorway without sacrificing privacy. Modern or contemporary style homes pair well with a color tinted frosted glass pane; a white wooden frame with a vibrant blue or red pane makes a bold design statement. Another classic look is to select a pair of French doors with clear glass and wooden panes. Though French doors are available with frosted glass, another option is to select clear panes but hang heavy curtains on the interior of the door to provide privacy. Etched glass doors with elaborate images of flowers, birds or contemporary patterns are beautiful options, but curtains may be necessary to guarantee privacy.

Sliding Doors

Instead of a traditional door which opens into the room, add style and save space by opting for a door that slides open and closed. Reclaimed or antiqued barn doors add rustic charm to a master bedroom doorway. Barn doors typically attach to a metal railing installed about the interior of the doorway and slide across the railing to reveal or cover the opening. One problem with barn doors is that you must leave the sliding wall free from furniture or move furniture away from the wall to permit easy opening. Solve this problem with a pocket style door that tucks into a compartment in the wall when the door is open. Pocket style doors are excellent space savers and offer complete privacy when the door is closed.

Arches

For an elegant and ornate doorway to your master bedroom, consider installing doors with an arched or domed top. With archway doors, the wall and frame are cut to accommodate a curve at the top, and the doors themselves have curved top edges. Because arched doorways require both width and height, they usually are reserved for exterior doors, but an arched doorway to a master bedroom makes a dramatic entryway. If the cost of arched doors is prohibitive for your budget, consider installing a false arch above an existing set of doors. Cut out an arch above the doorway and install a pane of clear or stained glass for a design element that doesn't sacrifice privacy. Decorative curved arches made from carved wood or molding also add style to a master bedroom doorway.
