Ideas for a Wedding Shower Cook-Out
A cookout is an informal alternative to the traditional wedding shower, where guests can mingle in a low-key situation. Because it is held outdoors, guests can bring family, and the gathering will take on a relaxed atmosphere. As you plan a wedding shower cookout, consider food, setting, seating and activities Does this Spark an idea?

Location
-
The most important thing to consider when planning a wedding shower cookout is location. If you have a large backyard with a grill, you can hold the party at home with minimal fuss. For large parties, head to a local park and take advantage of their built-in grills. During the summer or if children will be in attendance, a beach cookout can combine fun, swimming and a romantic bonfire. As you choose the location, consider where guests will sit and where food will be prepared; you may need to request that each party bring a blanket or beach chair. Before you send out invitations, be sure that you have secured any necessary permits or rented a picnic structure.
Menu
-
Because a cookout is an inherently informal event, you can stick to a low-key menu. Designate one person to be the chef--preferably someone outside of the wedding party so that they are free to mingle and socialize. Consider dietary restrictions when choosing food items, and include options that are suitable for vegetarians, vegans and gluten-intolerant guests. Chicken, steak, grilled vegetable skewers, potatoes in foil packets, and corn on the cob are popular cookout choices. For a beach gathering, find food that can be cooked on a stick, such as shish-kabobs, hot dogs and bratwurst. Bring along several side dishes: salads, fruit trays, pasta salad and chips are easy and quick to prepare. For dessert, you can provide supplies for s'mores so guests can participate in cooking. Keep drinks simple by providing beverages in individual cans or bottles stored in coolers of ice.

Activities
-
During a wedding shower, many guests will come bearing gifts. If the location allows, you can open gifts for everyone to see; otherwise, save them for later and focus on the party. Have someone bring a guitar for live music, and hold informal toasts by the bride and groom and their parents. To get guests mingling, organize games of frisbee, beach volleyball or other popular lawn games. If the shower is being held in the evening, pass out sparklers to the children and adults to add a festive touch.
