Hotels throughout Colorado have created ingenious fantasy and themed rooms, suites and even floors. Whether you're looking for a fun place to take the kids or an intimate getaway with your partner, and whether you prefer majestic mountains or urban excitement, you can find accommodations that transport you to other places and times.

Fanta-Suites at the Heritage Inn

Themed “Fanta-Suites” at the Heritage Inn in Evans, just south of Greeley, take you to an array of fantasy locations. In the Arabian Nights, you sleep in a sheik’s tent beneath a mirror with illuminated stars. A treehouse bed and waterfall emphasize Sherwood Forest’s woodland theme. The Space Odyssey transports you to the Gemini capsule, where the 10-sided water bed is surrounded by a galaxy mural. Other suites include the Caribbean, complete with cabana; the Cave, entered through a tunnel; the Northern Lights, where a mirror with illuminated stars overlooks an igloo; and the Wild Wild West, with a covered-wagon bed.

Pop Culture Rooms at the Curtis

The Curtis, a Doubletree by Hilton hotel in downtown Denver, incorporates pop culture and rock ’n’ roll motifs in several suites and themed rooms. The Jimmy Buffet Suite takes you to Margaritaville with tropical colors, a black-and-white beach mural and even a hula girl statue. In the Spice Girls Suite, you can hang out on a pink sofa surrounded by colorful, zebra-patterned walls. On the 14th floor, TV mania takes center stage, with a themed room sporting TV-print drapes and a wall of caricatured talk-show hosts.

Millionaires Mansion

On Millionaires Row in Denver stands the Capitol Hill Mansion, an 1891 ruby sandstone edifice that now houses a bed-and-breakfast. Each of the eight rooms is designed around a theme, such as the Snowlover Balcony Room, where a snowy landscape mural covers two walls. The Bluebell Suite has its own solarium, while the Shooting Star Balcony and Pasque Flower rooms both occupy turret space and have whirlpool tubs perfect for romantic weekends.

Western Ways

The Country Lodge, in the western Colorado town of Montrose, served as home base to John Wayne when he filmed “True Grit.” Today, the lodge pays tribute to the “Duke” in its themed John Wayne Room, where decor includes Wayne memorabilia, Southwestern-patterned sheets and comforter, and a handmade cedar headboard. You can get a taste of Western heritage in other themed accommodations, too, including the Wrangler, Prospector and Wildlife rooms.

Cripple Creek Casino

Not only does McGills Casino in Cripple Creek have an Irish flavor -- complete with McGills Pint and Platter Pub -- but for a more cosmopolitan experience, you can choose from several themed suites in the hotel upstairs. With its stone fireplace, wood floors and hand-painted mural of a mountain scene, the Western suite focuses on sense of place. Columns, trompe-l’oeil and hand-painted murals convey a classical feel in the Roman suite. You also can stay in the Aspen, Evergreen or Royal suites. All have fireplaces and whirlpool tubs with jets.
