Tips to Beat the Winter Blues

Tips to Beat the Winter Blues thumbnail
The winter blues can be reversed with a few simple tricks.

According to Nicole Nichols--fitness instructor, health educator and contributor to Spark People--when winter comes around, the days get shorter as it gets dark earlier and earlier. Nichols notes that the winter blues are often characterized by feelings of depression, lack of motivation and a lethargic feeling. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to beat the winter blues and feel normal again.

  1. Exercise

    • One of the best ways to combat the blues is to exercise--any kind of exercise. Exercise relieves stress (and releases endorphins), according to Nichols. Exercise will give you extra energy, while also boosting your metabolism. You'll feel happier for hours after a good session of exercise.

    Healthy Diet

    • Dr. Jeffrey Rossman notes that maintaining a healthy diet is a key part of beating the winter blues. It is necessary to eat a diet that boosts energy: high in lean protein and complex carbohydrates. He also advises avoiding alcohol, sugar and foods that are high in fat.

    Sleep

    • Nicole Nichols outlines the importance of relaxation and sleep in fighting depression. Nichols advises averaging 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night, while keeping a consistent bedtime and waking time. She warns that it is imperative to avoid oversleeping, but to utilize naps if needed. This pattern of sleeping will increase your energy.

    Get Sun

    • Dr. Rossman explains that sun is an important part of beating the winter blues. On sunny days go outside, if only for a brief period of time. Nichols shares that sunlight improves our mood by releasing important neurotransmitters in the brain. Spend as much time in the sunlight as possible, even sitting near windows during the daytime to increase exposure.

    Get Help

    • Dr. Rossman warns that, if necessary, do not be afraid to seek out the aid of a professional: a doctor, a therapist or a counselor. Contact your local health department or mental health facility for further information on an appropriate person to meet with.
