Graphic designers are artistic professionals who develop, create and evaluate ways to communicate messages using print and electronic sources. They create layouts and designs for many different purposes, including publications, websites, promotional exhibits, company branding and brochures. They use a variety of elements, such as photography, animations and color software. There are certain qualities that a graphic designer must possess to succeed in the field.
A graphic designer must have good artistic ability and be able to visually and verbally express ideas. Someone in this position must be creative and have the skill to use many different artistic elements, such as color, shape and texture to display the appropriate message and appeal. Graphic designers also are able to create fresh and new design ideas.
Since consumer trends and tastes change rapidly, a graphic designer must have an open mind and the ability to predict and accept new ideas and effects. Reacting quickly under stress and meeting the needs of clients is a required quality. It is important for graphic designers to accept criticism in an objective manner and use it to improve designs to ensure that the client is completely satisfied.
A graphic designer must be able to effectively communicate with clients to establish the objectives and requirements of the design. There must be a solid understanding of what the design should communicate. The graphic designer obtains the related information from clients by setting up meetings to collaborate on the design requirements. A graphic designer works with clients in a straightforward manner to ensure that the designs satisfy the objectives. Teamwork with other design professionals may be necessary to ensure that the client's needs and deadlines are met.
A graphic designer must have good problem-solving skills and bear in the mind the physical, cognitive, social and cultural aspects in creating and completing designs for clients and the target audience. Someone in this position must be able to use consumer responses to improve designs.
Familiarity with Diverse Software
A good understanding of many different types of design software and computer graphics is necessary in this field. Knowledge of different computer files is important so that the client may be given the final design in a format that may be used for the purposes required, such as printing, banners, websites, products and packaging.
