State, local and private agencies often provide grants for agricultural business operators looking for capital funding, project funding or other sources of monetary income. Many Pennsylvania agricultural grant programs are offered through the state’s Department of Agriculture. The department seeks to support farmers, food producers, processors, researchers and educational organizations in the field of agriculture.

PA Grows Grants

PA Grows is an organization from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture that helps to provide information on grants and financial assistance to farmers in Pennsylvania. Agribusiness organizations, food producers and food processors can contact PA Grows to access grants available on federal, state or local levels. For example, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture offers grants for capital improvement projects, and the First Industry Fund offers $10 million in grant money to agricultural and tourism in Pennsylvania. PA Grows helps local businessmen in the agriculture field access these grants to gain capitol and funding.

Agriculture and Rural Youth Grant

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture also offers an Agricultural and Rural Youth grant for organizations that seek to promote awareness of agricultural issues among Pennsylvania youths. The grant is awarded in the amounts of $2,500 and $10,000. Some past winners of the grant include agricultural extension programs, agricultural education programs and 4-H organizations. Organizations are allowed to apply the grant money toward creating agricultural safety programs, promoting rural issues through educational programs, hosting field trips to agricultural areas or embarking on similar projects.

Direct Farm Sales Grant

Pennsylvania farmers or agribusiness operators can apply for a Direct Farm Sales Grant through the Bureau of Food Distribution at the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The grant program is designed to provide funding to farmers’ markets and individual producers who sell items through farmers’ markets. It can also be used to support projects that promote and conserve existing farmers’ markets. Grantees receive up to $7,500 per farmers’ market stand. Additionally, grantees must be able to match at least 25 percent of the grant amount through funds, good or services. Applications to earn the grant must be received by March of each year.
