How to Enjoy a Cold Day at the Beach

Enjoying the beach is easy. The sun, the water, the waves, the fresh scent of sand and salt air not to mention all the fun activities: sunbathing, people watching, frisbee, volleyball, bird watching and walking along the shore. Most people simply need a sunny day, a bathing suit and a towel and their good to go for hours at a beach. But what most people don't consider is how to still enjoy a great day at the beach even when it's cold.

Throw on a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt and you can still experience the best of what the beach has to offer.

Making sandcastles is fun on a cold day. You don't end up all sweaty but your sandy creations can really come together.

Picture taking is incredible on a cold day because often the lighting can be sharper but with less shadows. The sun isn't as high in the sky when the temperatures are cooler so my pictures tend to have a crisper image.

Pack a picnic of simple sandwiches and consider throwing in a thermos of hot soup or cocoa to take away the chill. Getting a game of football started is perfect for a fifty degree day at the beach. You won't have to worry about the ball hitting other beach goers and you won't work up as much of a sweat if the day is cooler. You get the beach to yourself. One of the least enjoyable sides to a day at the beach is how outrageously crowded the beach can get. When the temperatures are cooler you will have more of the beach to yourself. Invite friends and family and let the fun begin.

It's a great way to begin a seashell collection. The winter usually deposits all kinds of things on the beach near the house-things that have washed up during winter storms. My best shells and driftwood pieces have been found before the height of summer while the weather is still cool. Droves of people have yet to hit the beach and all kinds of unique finds are there waiting to be discovered.

It's a great opportunity to get inspired. The beach provides great inspiration. It's something about the combination of smells, sounds and open land and water that really gets creative juices flowing. On a cold day you might notice things you never saw before and be inspired in a refreshing way. The beach has a calming effect-no need to wait until the temperatures rise until you can appreciate this benefit. We live in a fast paced, multi tasked culture. Slipping away to the beach at off times can be incredibly rewarding and inspirational.

Go prepared. If you want to spend the day at the beach on a cold day go prepared. Allow yourself a number of layers so that you can take off and put on as needed. Pack a lunch, bring your towel, beach towels and sunblock too. You can still get burned even when it's cold. If you bring the usual beach gear you allow yourself the opportunity to stay longer. If your adjusting to the temperatures well and have come prepared you might even enjoy a good book and nap especially if you threw in an extra blanket.
