The Department of Homeland Security sponsors grants for government and public safety agencies to purchase vehicles to strengthen their abilities to respond to hazards, disasters, acts of terror and other emergencies. Funds are also used to purchase equipment and pay for emergency personnel training and exercise activities. These grants from Homeland Security do not have to be repaid by the recipients.

Emergency Management Performance Grants

The Department of Homeland Security sponsors the Emergency Management Performance Grant program, which provides grants to assist government agencies with sustaining and enhancing their capabilities to respond to all emergencies and hazards. Grants are used for planning, training and exercises. Funds are also used by recipients to provide consistent and effective responses to emergencies, which includes purchasing emergency equipment and vehicles. These grants are open to state government agencies.

Homeland Security Grant Program

The Homeland Security Grant Program is the primary funding source for units of government agencies to respond to acts of terrorism and other disasters. Grants are used to build and sustain preparedness capabilities, which include purchasing emergency vehicles, equipment, technology and developing response plans to emergency situations. Funds are also used to support preventive, response and recover training activities. States and local government entities are eligible to apply for these grants.

Assistance to Firefighters Grant

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program provides grants to fire departments to enhance their capabilities in dealing with fires and fire-related hazards. Grants are used to purchase emergency medical vehicles and firefighting and personal protective equipment. Funds are also used to cover training, wellness and fitness exercise activities and facility modification projects. Only fire departments and emergency medical service organizations are eligible to apply for these grants.
