Your dad's 50th birthday is a milestone and should be celebrated with birthday gifts that show your love for him and how he's had an impact on your life. While sentimental gifts will make him feel good about the life he's lead so far, gentle pokes about the fact that he's getting older can also lighten the mood. Gifts that are personal and reflect the importance of his life will have more meaning than a store-bought item.
Over the past 50 years, your dad has probably been through a lot and chances are, there is video footage to prove it. Use a video converter or have a professional transfer old videos into a digital format so that you can put them on a DVD. Scan old images and add those to the DVD as well. Get creative and make a timeline of your dad's life that he can treasure for the next 50 years.
Write a poem of how you feel about your dad. It doesn't have to be perfect, but make it from the heart. Think about things you did together as a child or memories you have of your dad doing something nice for you and use them as inspiration. Frame your poem so that your dad can keep it and read it forever or glue it as the first page of a blank journal that your dad can use to write his own poetry.
Electronics with Manual
One things most dads like are electronics. Whether it's an MP3 player, a new TV, a netbook computer or a digital book reader, your dad probably has it on his list. The only problem is that he might not know how to use one, since he's getting older. Instead of having him rely on the standard manual or how-to book, make your own as a gentle and funny poke about his age. Record yourself setting up the electronics so not only does your dad have the instructions handy when he needs them, but you also get a gift, since dad won't be calling every few minutes asking you how to put the thing together.
If your dad is a collector or really favors one company or product in his life, a stock certificate for that company makes a unique treasure he can add to the collection. Many are available online and can be framed with engravings for companies like Ford, Disney and Macintosh. Your dad can not only love a company, but own a little piece of it himself.
