Ideas for Cheap Halloween Costumes for Couples

A couples' costume gives you a creative way to celebrate Halloween together. Store-bought costumes aren't cheap, however, especially when you're shopping for two. You can make a pair of costumes that are inexpensive and original by using basic craft and beauty supplies, thrift store finds, and clothing and accessories you already have.

Fairy-Tale Couples

  • If there's a bridesmaid gown in your closet, put it to work as a princess costume. Tie a sash around the waist, and wear ballet flats or sparkly pumps. Add regal accessories, such as long gloves and a tiara. The handsome prince can wear a high-collared jacket and pants tucked into tall boots. Tack gold fringe on the shoulders, and accessorize it with a sash and medals. If your fairy-tale style is more down to earth, dress as Goldilocks and one of her bear friends. For Goldilocks, layer a simple dress over a round-collared blouse, and accessorize it with tights and Mary Jane shoes. Wear a blond wig, if necessary, and tie the hair with a ribbon. For a simple bear costume, dress in brown pants and a brown hooded sweatshirt. Tack brown felt or paper ears to the hood, and use makeup to create a bear nose and mouth.

Time Travelers

  • Make it a throwback Halloween with costumes inspired by fashions from the 1960s, '70s, '80s or '90s. To dress as flower children, search your closet for ripped denim, a peasant dress or skirt and anything with fringe. Accessories were pretty gender-neutral in the '60s, so men and women can both wear colorful scarves, long strands of beads, headbands and wire-rimmed glasses if you have them. If disco is more your style, create two costumes with wardrobe pieces that have some glam. Visit thrift stores to find a lame or satiny pantsuit for her and a silky shirt, wide-lapel jacket and flared pants for him. Accessorize the disco diva's look with platform shoes, big wavy hair and bright, heavy eye makeup. Have him wear gold chains and a blow-dried hairstyle.

Creepy Couple

  • Frankenstein's monster and his hair-raising bride are the quintessential Halloween couple. Copy their classic look with wardrobe staples, simple makeup and creative hairstyling. For his costume, top black pants and a black T-shirt with a boxy black jacket. Powder his face white, and use eye shadow and liner to create sunken eyes and cheeks, a heavy brow, a facial scar and neck bolts. Complete the look with slicked-down hair and black boots. For the bride's costume, use a long white dress or gown. Wrap her arms in strips of white gauze or cloth, and use makeup to create a pale face, angled eyebrows, dark lips and neck scars. To create the signature hairstyle, arrange curled hair on top of her head and secure it with extra-hold hairspray. Add white streaks with temporary hair-color spray.

This and That

  • Ketchup and mustard aren't romantically linked, but they make original Halloween costumes. Red and yellow sweatpants and long-sleeved T-shirts provide the basis for the costumes. Wear white knit caps or baseball hats, and tape labels from ketchup and mustard jars to them. Draw large labels on pieces of poster board, or use black felt letters to spell out the condiment names on your shirts. If you want your costumes to have an element of audience participation, dress as a crayon and coloring book. Have the crayon wear matching pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and a cone-shaped hat made from poster board in the same color. For the coloring book, draw simple line drawings on a large sheet of poster board and wear it around your neck. Carry crayons with you and invite Halloween partygoers to do some coloring.
