Ideas for Boy's Birthday Party Cakes

Save

If you are making your own birthday cake for your young son on his special day, make a custom cake based on one of his favorite things. Your creative cake will be certain to surprise and delight him, and give him a birthday party that he will not soon forget.

Locomotive

  • If your son enjoys locomotives or large machines in general---perhaps he and Dad enjoy building model trains together---create a cake that looks like a scene from a model train setup. Construct a rectangular cake in a long, flat pan. Use green frosting for grass, and build the landscape from a combination of frosting and plastic trees. Complete the scene with an engine heading down the track, using white frosting, marshmallows or cotton candy to suggest puffs of steam.

Bicycle

  • If your son doesn't go anywhere without his bike, consider creating a cake in the shape of a bicycle. Use frosting or fondant to simulate the colors of your son's bike, and add his name to the frame of the bike as if it were the name of the bike model.

Rock 'n' Roll

  • Rock 'n' roll will never die, and boys of all ages love it. Your boy may be an aspiring musician, driving you crazy on his drum set or turned-up guitar. Whether your son plays an actual instrument or uses the virtual instruments of "Rock Band" or "Guitar Hero" to live out his fantasies, you can build a cake in the shape of his favorite instrument. For added interest, use edible gold flakes on the sides of the drums or in the frosting used to draw "strings" on the guitar.

Fishing

  • Fishing is a favorite hobby for fathers and sons, and if your son enjoys fishing, use a flat cake to construct a fishing scene. Place Dad and son on a boat in the middle of the lake, complete with a full bucket of fish and lines dipping into the water. Write your son's name on the hull of the boat.

Edible Printing

  • Edible ink has become a popular recent trend in cake making. You can order edible printed cakes through companies online or at some local bakeries, and what you receive is a cake with a realistic picture that your son and his friends can actually eat. A printed cake is limited only by your creativity. For example, you might consider creating a cake using a funny and slightly embarrassing baby photo.
