Southern California Orchestra & Music Activities
Southern California has a warm climate perfect for outdoor entertainment. Amphitheaters abound in the Southland, from the Hollywood Bowl to the Greek Theater in Griffith Park. There are also state-of-the-art performing centers throughout the Los Angeles area. The Getty Villa in Malibu is modeled after a Roman villa, and it hosts classical music concerts; so does the Los Angeles Performing Arts Center, which hosts four different venues for performances by resident groups such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Los Angeles Opera.

The world-renowned Hollywood Bowl is the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Throughout the summer, you can find concert events at the Bowl for prices ranging from $2 on up. The Classical Tuesdays and Thursdays program presents classical musicians from around the world, and there are many weekend classical events, including Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overtune performed with fireworks. Other events at the Bowl include jazz, blues, soul and rock music concerts as well as specialty events such as a Sing-A-Long Sound of Music and the showing of Bugs Bunny cartoons with a live soundtrack played by the L.A. Symphony.
The Hollywood Bowl offers an evening of entertainment unlike any other Southland venue. The entire area surrounding the Bowl caters to picnickers who fill local parks and the picnic areas at the Bowl for pre-show meals. Local delis sell Bowl picnic supplies. You can even sign up for recipes from local chefs based on the week's selections at the Bowl. Inside the Bowl, cheese platters and wine in bottles are sold, along with other food items. The Bowl offers an outdoor setting surrounded by hills in the warm Mediterranean climate Los Angeles is known for. For music and an evening of entertainment, you cannot beat the Hollywood Bowl.

Due to the warm and dry Southern California weather, there are many outside venues for music in Los Angeles. The Ford Amphitheater, with its seating for 1,245, dates back to outdoor performances in the 1930s. This outside amphitheater and smaller intimate theater inside the accompanying performing arts center are owned by the County of Los Angeles. The Ford theaters provide a wide assortment of entertainment including international music and dance. The Greek Amphitheater, on the grounds of Griffith Park, seats 5,801. Its musical offerings tend to be more contemporary and less classical. The Gibson Amphitheater at Universal Studios also offers outside music concerts.
