Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet and data analysis tool with many practical applications. It comes in a bundle with Microsoft Office and cannot be purchased separately. Although it is a useful software program once it is understood, it can be very confusing to the uninitiated. Microsoft offers several Excel training tutorials online, but the Internet also provides a wide variety of other resources provided by users of Excel. Nearly every learning style is accommodated in the mix of online Excel training tools.

Microsoft (MS) offers free online training for Excel 2010, 2007 and 2003. The MS Excel 2010 training site includes instructions for making your first spreadsheet and securing the privacy of your files. It also teaches how to use functions to do things such as pay monthly bills. You can also download PowerPoint tutorials for Excel 2010 at the MS site. MS training for Excel 2007 includes instructions for making charts, reports and spreadsheets and also teaches how to use formulas, format dates and how to use security measures. The MS training for Excel 2003 includes lessons on AutoFilter, tools and menus, professional-looking charts, accessibility features, formulas, security, workbooks, worksheets and keyboard shortcuts. All of these training programs are available online, they are all free and they are all provided by the creator/producer of Excel software.

Many universities provide Excel training resources and although tutorials speak about different editions of the program, the basic functions used in Excel stay constant. Duke University hosts a large collection of Excel training resources, running the gamut from basic Excel tutorials to reference guides and a list of websites dedicated to Excel. They also provide a pdf for paper-based Excel logic exercises. The University of South Dakota has produced a very simple and straightforward Excel training program which teaches people about the basic concept of databases and spreadsheets, and teaches Excel functions and formatting. This site also includes a quiz at the end of it. The University of Rhode Island also has made a basic Excel tutorial which includes eight chapters covering the topics of simple workbooks, operations and functions, formatting workbook appearance, cell copying, linking documents and creating charts.

The official MS Excel product team blog hosts a list of 214 keyboard shortcuts for Excel. David McRitchie also hosts a list of keyboard shortcuts for everything from data input to calculations and functions. The official MS Office site also has key shortcuts for Excel. Other helpful Excel resources include Education Online For Computers' comprehensive list of Excel websites and YouTube, which hosts many video tutorials, as well as tricks and tips, for Excel.
