Scaffolding allows workers to safely perform work at high altitudes.

Scaffolding provides workers the opportunity to perform work safely at high altitudes. The work that is performed with the use of scaffolding is often dangerous even with the use of scaffolding. This helpful tool is used primarily in the construction industry, but is used in other industries as well.

  1. Drywall Installers

    • Drywall installers use scaffolding on a frequent basis. Drywall installers perform their trade in locations ranging from residential homes and apartment complexes to commercial and industrial offices and warehouses. Drywall typically comes in sheets that are eight feet long and four feet wide. Handling such awkward materials at high levels would be a dangerous job without the safe platform provided by scaffolding. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average hourly wage of a drywall installer as of May 2008 was $18.12 per hour.

    Stucco Mason

    • Stucco masons apply stucco to the side of buildings. Stucco is a specially prepared mix of Portland cement, sand and lime that is very durable to outside elements. Many homes have a layer of stucco applied to their exteriors to take advantage of this durability, as well as its pleasing appearance. Stucco masons use scaffolding to allow them to safely reach the upper portions of homes and buildings where otherwise there would be a high risk of falling. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average hourly wage of stucco masons as of May 2008 was $18.01 per hour.

Construction Painter and Wall Paper Hanger

    • Construction painters and wall paper hangers frequently use scaffolding to apply paint or wall paper to high, hard-to-reach places. These workers are most often found in construction sites at residential homes and apartments as well as commercial and industrial offices, plants and warehouses. Painters should be knowledgeable in selecting the right colors and finishes for a room, while wall paper hangers should be knowledgeable in applying the undercoating for the wall paper in addition to selecting matching patterns and colors for a room. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average hourly wage of painters as of May 2009 was $16.21 per hour. The average hourly wage for wall paper hangers as of May 2009 was $18.00 per hour.

    Mural Painter

    • Mural painters are artists that paint large pictures on walls and ceilings. Murals are found in many locations and range greatly in their subject matter. Mural artists use scaffolding for large-scale murals to help paint their art at heights that would be unreachable otherwise. Large cities, such as San Francisco, are inhabited with full-time mural painters that possess fine arts degrees. These professional artists are often commissioned by cities and municipalities to paint murals on local buildings.
