Although running a day care from home can be much less expensive than renting an external facility, startup costs for small businesses usually require more than you may have in your personal savings. While loans are commonly used by business owners, grants are highly sought after because they are awarded with no responsibility to pay them back.

The Child Care Development Block Grant provides grants to states to support child care businesses. For a database of all states with contact information about this program, check the "Resources" section. Also, if your home daycare requires $35,000 or less for startup costs, you are considered a Microenterprise and you may qualify for unique funding opportunities through the Child Care Bureau's Microenterprise Resource guide (see "Resources").

CACFP, the Child and Adult Food Care Program, is a federal program that reimburses money spent on food costs at day care facilities. In order to receive cash reimbursement from CACFP, your day care must be licensed or registered--specific requirements for licensure vary by state. Approved centers may claim, per day, up to two reimbursable meals and one snack.

Check with your local bank, credit union or state government to find out about grants in your area. According to Child Care Aware, some local businesses offer grants to day care providers to improve employee retention for their companies. Additionally, because of a lack of day care providers, some cities provide incentive programs for new daycares. Another excellent resource for home daycare providers is Foundation Grants to Individuals Online, a database of 8000 grant-giving non-profit foundations.
