Police Requirements to Check Prisoners in Illinois
Running checks on prisoners in Illinois involves different requirements, depending on the agency and whether you are looking for a current or former inmate. The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) provides information on former and current inmates but not after they have completed their sentence/parole or are in county jail awaiting sentencing. Otherwise, the Illinois State Police should be consulted. The State Police can run a more thorough statewide check that will include both current and former prisoners.

IDOC Requirements for Obtaining Information on Current Inmates
-
IDOC allows access to an online database of inmates. In order to make a query, the search engine requires that you either provide a last name, date of birth or the prisoner's IDOC number. If your query produces a result or several results, you will be able to access the prisoner's mug shot, location of incarceration, offender status and physical profile. You also will be able to access a list of convictions, length of sentence and projected release date. Bear in mind that many prisoners use aliases and incorrect dates of birth that may frustrate your search.

Police Requirements for Obtaining Information on Current and Former Inmates without Fingerprints
-
The Illinois State Police collect and maintain records of convicted criminals. The "Non-Fingerprint Conviction Information Request Form" may be used to request information on a current or former inmate through various identifiers such as name, sex, race and date of birth. Though there are no exact requirements to make the search, the more identifiers you supply, the greater the chance the police will be able to find a record. Again, remember that many prisoners use aliases and incorrect dates of birth that may prevent identification so provide as much information as possible. The processing fee for a non-fingerprint request is $16 paid by check or money order, as of August 2010.

The most effective way to run a check on a current or former prisoner in Illinois is to conduct the search by matching fingerprints through the Illinois State Police's "Fingerprint Conviction Information Request Form." In order to do this, you will be required to furnish the fingerprints of your subject. The State Police will then run a fingerprint-based criminal history record check in search of a positive identification. As of August 2010, the processing free for a fingerprint request is $20 paid by check or money order.
