Elements of Efficient Organizational Structure
Every organization strives to be successful and meet its goals every year. However, many companies fail to meet their goals because they are not built in order to maximize efficiency. There are a number of important structural elements that go into creating a productive organization, such as work specialization, a clear hierarchy and departmentalization.

Specialist Roles

Every employee in a company should have a specific set of duties and responsibilities that they are to perform. This specialization should be closely related to an individual's experience, qualifications and skills. This means that all employees will be in a role for which they are experienced, instead of being asked to carry out a function for which they have no training or qualifications. A benefit of this structural component is that "individual employees specialize in doing part of an activity rather than the entire activity," according to Emaytrix.
Departmentalization

The structure of an organization should be broken up into departments, based on the function that the group of employees carries out. For example, a company may have a technical department, a manufacturing department and a finance department, among others. Each department is aware of its own obligations, and can interact with other departments to share information and assistance.

Hierarchy

A successful business should have a clear chain of command that each employee understands. It is the function of the manager to issue clear instructions, lead by example and report on the progress of the team or department. Tutor2u states that this "helps create a clear communication line between the top and bottom of the business."
Policies

A profitable business will have clear, defined and readily available policies that dictate a whole range of items, such as dress code, acceptable Internet usage, working hours and other issues. Without these rules, you run the risk of confusion amongst employees, which can lead to lower productivity.
