Entry into the field of ceramic engineering requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree. A small number of colleges in the United States offer such programs, preparing students to develop ceramics in a variety of uses like medical devices and protective tiles that cover spacecrafts.

Alfred University is a private, nonsectarian institution in Alfred, New York, 70 miles south of Rochester. In 2010, "U.S. News and World Report" ranked the college's engineering programs 129th in the country. The college offers a bachelor of science degree in ceramics engineering through its New York State College of Ceramics and Inamori School of Engineering. Requirements include calculus, chemistry, computer-aided drafting, statistics, materials processing, thermodynamics, electrical and magnetic properties and powder processing. All undergraduate students have the opportunity to pursue independent research in ceramics engineering while completing the degree. The college also grants master's and doctoral degrees in ceramic engineering.

Located in Seattle, the University of Washington received the 28th-place ranking among all U.S.engineering schools from "U.S. News and World Report." All undergraduate students interested in pursuing an engineering degree spend their first years completing foundational courses in mathematics and science, then apply for admission to the College of Engineering. The school features a bachelor's degree in material science and engineering with a concentration on ceramics engineering. All students complete an independent research project prior to graduation as a part of the major. The school also offers a combined degree program, which allows students to graduate in five years with both a bachelor's and master's degree in ceramic engineering. Both master's and Ph.D. programs are also offered.
