Government Innovation Grants
Several government programs are available that sponsor grants to foster innovative ideas and solutions to boost hiring, conduct and share research information and develop technologies to combat medical problems such as blindness and low vision. These innovation grants are also used to cover the costs associated with research and development projects.

Vision Research Grant Program

The Department of Health and Human Services sponsors the Vision Research Grant Program which provides grants to fund research project to address the leading causes of impaired vision and blindness in the United States. Grants are used to pay for salaries, equipment and supplies, consultation costs, patient costs and travel expenses. Funds are also used to make alteration and renovations to facilities. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, small businesses, public and private institutions of higher education and federal, state, local and tribal government agencies.

Engineering Grants

The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds engineering grants to finance research and development projects that improve the quality of life and economic strength of our Nation. Some of the approved research areas include tissue engineering, fluid flow, geologic materials, heat transfer, civil infrastructure and protein drug processing. Grants are used to cover the direct project costs such as traveling expenses, salaries and wage, equipment and publication costs. Public and private institutions of higher education, for-profit and nonprofit organizations and state and local government agencies are eligible to apply for these grants. Grants cannot be used for inventions, marketing costs or technical assistance.

Public Works and Economic Development

The Public Works and Economic Development program is sponsored by the Department of Commerce which provides grants to create innovative ways to keep and attract private sector jobs and capital as well as promote regional entrepreneurship and competitiveness. Grants are used to fund public infrastructure projects such building roads, industrial and business parks, port facilities, rail spurs, business incubator facilities and improving telecommunications and broadband infrastructures. States, cities, counties and tribal government agencies, public and private nonprofit organizations and institutions of higher education can apply for these grants.
