Amber Stoplight Florida Laws
In Florida, amber or yellow traffic lights signal that traffic flow is about to change. Amber lights are used at stoplights, crosswalks and on signs to alert you to changing road conditions. Ignoring amber lights, unlike ignoring red lights, is not an automatic traffic violation. However, not using caution in situations with amber lights may cause dangerous driving conditions and tickets.

Amber lights at intersections, crosswalks and lane signals all indicate that drivers should be prepared to stop. At stoplights, drivers should stop if they are able, keeping in mind that it is illegal to stop past the stop line or in a crosswalk. Amber lane signal signs indicate that the lane will soon be closed and drivers should switch into another lane.

Amber blinking lights are meant to caution drivers to use extra caution. It is not legally required to come to a full stop at an intersection with a blinking amber light. However, since blinking amber lights indicate that an area is congested, has limited visibility or is otherwise dangerous to drivers or pedestrians, practicing defensive driving is a good idea.

Although you will not get a ticket for running an amber light, it is very important to be pay attention to amber lights since they convey important information. Blinking amber lights on bridges, tollbooths, speed limit signs, and school zone signs require compliance and will result in a ticket if ignored.
