The city of Los Angeles Department of Aging provides federal, state and locally funded senior services through its 16 senior centers throughout the city. Each center is open Monday through Friday and provides a wide range of social and recreational activities, as well as providing a free hot lunch to attendees. Seniors are welcome at any of the centers, but if they want to take advantage of specific services such as case management, social work and transportation services, they must visit the center that serves their area. The centers serve areas defined by zip codes. To find their nearest center, a senior can call 800-510-2020, and the operator will give them the details for the center serving their zip code. There are five senior centers located in the San Fernando Valley. The nearest center to Sherman Oaks is the Bernardi Multipurpose Senior Center.

Recreation and Education

The city of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department runs senior centers that focus predominantly on social and recreational activities, such as bingo, exercise and dance classes, day trips and educational classes. Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Senior Center welcomes seniors seven days a week.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) offers a welath of volunteer opportunities for anyone aged 55 or older who wants to be active in their local community. RSVP assists more than 150 non-profit and community organizations to find enthusiastic volunteers. Organizations include schools, museums, libraries, hospitals and colleges, and volunteer activities are so wide-ranging that there is something to suit everyone. RSVP tries to find opportunities for seniors in their local neighborhood.
