Walking is often recommended by osteoarthritis support programs to manage the disease.

According to Everydayhealth.com, approximately 27 million Americans are affected by osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition of the muscles and joints that is characterized by symptoms such as pain, swelling and stiffness. Unlike arthritis, osteoarthritis is not inflammatory and is generally not disabling. However, those living with osteoarthritis may struggle with walking, standing, and even weight loss. With the help of major organizations and the Internet, support groups exist to help individuals manage the condition.

  1. Life Improvement Series

    • The Arthritis Foundation sponsors the Life Improvement Series for those living with osteoarthritis. The series consists of a variety of exercises taught by certified instructors. Individuals learn exercises to increase flexibility, mobility and muscle strength. Standing and sitting exercises are included. Additionally, light swimming instruction is provided to assist with flexibility and mobility training. Through the "Walk with Ease" program, individuals are taught walking methods that can help reduce pain. According to the foundation's website, Arthritisfoundation.org, members have seen improvements such as weight loss, pain reduction and decrease in the amount of medication needed.

    Osteoarthritis Support and Information Service

    • The Osteoarthritis Support and Information Service (OASIS) is an online support program that offers the following services and resources for osteoarthritis patients: "Oasis Action Tracker," "Oasis Joint," and "Oasis Knee Knowledge." The "Oasis Action Tracker" is a diary given to osteoarthritis patients to help them manage their weekly progress. The "Oasis Joint" and "Oasis Knee Knowledge" components of the program provide educational resources such as a monthly newsletter to inform sufferers about treatment and care options. The program is free. New members receive a welcome package that includes an osteoarthritis exercise sheet, exercise bands, and a free copy of "Walk with Ease," a book from the Arthritis Foundation that helps osteoarthritis sufferers manage walking.

    Osteoarthritis Alliance

    • The Osteoarthritis Alliance is a group of osteoarthritis patients who provide online encouragement and support to one another and correspond with the Arthritis Foundation in regard to curative care and treatment. Through forums, members can discuss surgical procedures, coping skills and exercise habits. Membership is free and provides osteoarthritis patients with a number of educational resources and activities ranging from research articles on managing pain to "Lets Move Together," an online community of sufferers who explore ways to maintain an active lifestyle while coping with osteoarthritis. Members of "Lets Move Together" pledge to move 30 minutes daily.
